Some "Birth Kit" Supplies
for Homebirth

The following are examples of basic birth kit essentials for you to provide, in addition to the supplies and equipment your midwife brings. Many of these items can be ordered in pre-made or customized kits available from various suppliers. See below for a partial list of supply companies.

It is recommended to first wash the sheets and other bedding and cloth items with bleach (or oxygen bleach) and then dry in a hot dryer:
  • Plastic sheet, mattress cover or shower curtain to protect your mattress.
  • Two sets of clean sheets to fit the birth bed. While in early labor, make the bed with one complete set of clean sheets, cover them with the plastic sheet, and then put on the second set of sheets.
  • 2-4 towels (more if planning a waterbirth)
  • 2-4 wash cloths
  • 6-12 receiving blankets (not your best ones)
  • 2-3 cotton jersey knit baby hats
  • diapers (newborn size)
  • baby's first comfortable, warm clothes
  • extra nightgowns for Mom, with buttons or snaps in front
  • 2 large size garbage bags (leaf-raking size)
  • 8+ kitchen size plastic garbage bags
  • ice pack or blue ice or a plastic squeeze bottle filled with water to just below the neck and frozen
  • 1 pkg. underpads (plastic-backed disposable sheeting) - large size
  • 1 peri bottle
  • 12 lg. "heavy flow" sanitary napkins
  • light foods, teas and juices for the laboring woman
  • 1 heating pad or hot water bottle
  • bright, portable light
  • space heater
  • thermometer
  • several bottles of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tube Lansinoh
  • food for midwives (vegetarian and other)
  • box of tissues or roll of toilet paper
  • roll of paper towels
  • flashlight
  • clean water
  • hand mirror
  • an ear bulb syringe of good quality
  • 1 large bowl (such as a wide mixing bowl)
