A FEW BASIC GUIDELINES

Read Pocket Guide to Midwifery Care and other informative publications.

Contact several midwives in your area to learn about their protocols.

Your attitudes and opinions are important, too, so be open about your concerns and needs while you and the midwives learn if a comfortable relationship may develop.

After an initial consultation, the midwives' care includes prenatal checkups and they will want to have your complete health history.

Ask important questions. For example:
  • What is the midwife's experience and training?
  • What equipment/supplies does she bring?
  • What are her reasons for being a midwife?
  • What are her protocols?
    Complications? Emergencies?
  • Does she have assistants?
    Their experience & qualifications?
  • What is included in her care?
  • What are her fees? Additional lab costs?
  • Schedule? Availability?
  • References?

  • If you choose a doctor or hospital, etc., ask them these questions and more.
